On the 11th of November a new “Polish landmark” came into being in Erbil. On the initiative of KRG’s representative to Poland, Mr. Ziyad Raoof, Governorate of Erbil and Kurdistan-Poland Friendship Society a tree named “Kraków” was planted in the Minaret Park.

Kraków (or Cracow) is the historic capital of Poland and over the last decades became home for many Iraqi Kurds fleeing persecution and wars. Also in Cracow the Polish-Kurdish Friendship Society had been established in 1992 which later (2001) developed into Kurdish Information and Documentation Center. The tree commemorates as well 100 years of Poland's independence.

The ceremony was attended by Head of the Consular Agency of the Republic of Poland in Erbil, Mr. Dominik Musiał, local authorities & organizations’ representatives, friends of Poland and Polish residents of the Iraqi Kurdistan.

The tree was planted just behind the park entrance from Halabja St. on the right side accompanied by a memorial plate.
